Nirupa Roy | Her journey From Super Man to Super Weeping Maa

Nirupa Roy ji was mostly known for portraying the character roles of Indian mother. But Nirupa Roy was the first Super Man of Bollywood. Yes that’s true!

This Super Man Movie of 1960 was directed by Anant Thakur. Nirupa Roy was the lead actor playing the role of Super Man. Along with Nirupa Roy, Jairaj, Neeta and Helen were also featured in the film.

Prem Dhawan had written the lyrics of film. This film did not get audience love but it creates a strong image of Nirupa Roy.

On the poster of this film, you will see Nirupa Roy in Super Man costume. You will also find some interesting lines ‘A Super Dog’ and ‘A Super Horse’ which means Producer wants to prove that film is full of action.

Well if we talk about Nirupa Roy – Her acting career spanned more than 50 years, and she acted in more than 275 films.

In 1940s and 50s, she mostly played the mythological characters in the films. You will surprised to know that at that time, her image of a goddess was very strong and people would visit her home to seek her blessings.

During the 1970s and 80s, she started playing the leading roles in films. After that she started playing the role of mother. She was referred to as the “Queen of Misery” in Hindi film circles.

In film Deewar (1975), she played the role of Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor’s mother, which in turn made her name synonymous to the impoverished suffering mother. She was regarded as the greatest Mother of all time in Bollywood. Her role in film Deewaar and its dialogues with reference to a mother and son are still used as a clichés.

Nirupa Roy died after having a cardiac arrest in Mumbai on 13th October 2004 at the age of 73.
