Free The Nipple movement | Celebs Who Went Bra less

Free The Nipple movement | Celebrities leaving their bras at home so they can be comfortable when going to grab a cup of coffee or meet a friend for lunch. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice the bra and rely instead on the miracles of double-sided table, strapless bras, or built-in cups to keep everything looking picture-perfect in couture clothes.

Check out these 15 celebrities who absolutely hate committing to the boob prison and support Free the Nipple movement.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears is a member of the no-bra brigade, seeing as she’s regularly photographed going without the underwire (and sometimes without the panties). In fact, Britney doesn’t just hate wearing bras – she forgets to.

Seriously! In an interview, Brit stated that she always listen’s to *NSYNC’s “Tearin’ Up My Heart”, because it reminds her to wear a bra! (After really looking into the lyrics, there’s still no clear reason why this is.) But the bigger travesty here is that Brit needs to be reminded to wear a bra at all!

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez who regularly flaunts her braless figure on the red carpet and while running around town. Whether she’s donning crop tops, backless shirts, or even posing for photo shoots where she lets the girls speak for themselves.

Selena looks comfortable and content embracing her natural beauty. She knows that boobs aren’t always picture perfect and that Photoshop is everywhere, so we love her for rocking what she’s got and not apologizing for it.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow said they lead to breast cancer! Gwyn’s doctor who wrote the GOOP piece she posted stated that wearing bras for 12 hours a day or more can increase the risk of breast cancer in women.  However, it seems Gwyn has taken his thoughts to heart (or to breast), and regularly showcases her svelte shape without the additional support.

Gwyneth regularly opts to go braless for the sake of fashion. While she’s got yoga and a crazy diet to credit for her fabulous figure, it’s also her naturally slender frame that allows Gwyn to rock the no-bra look on a regular basis.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner doesn’t occasionally take the no-bra look for a test drive, too. While the youngest Jenner has dealt with tons of rumors of plastic surgery, including enhancing her chest, Kylie has stated time and time again that her pumped-up look is the result of a good push-up bra and hormones around her time of the month.

However, when Kylie does go braless, it’s usually for the sake of fashion and photo shoots. While double-sided tape or other non-bra contraptions are probably used to keep things in place, Kylie is no stranger to not wearing a bra. While most snapshots of Kylie going braless are for an event or magazine spread, there are still some that show the littlest sister enjoying the au naturel look when she’s off-duty too.

Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway has flashed her nips more than a few times! While totally not intentional, Anne’s curves are definitely some that require a little more support to look their best, but even off the red carpet, the pretty mama and Academy Award winner is still a devoted fan of the no-bra look.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence is the ideal every girl. She’s said in multiple interviews that she loves to just spend her time at home eating pizza and going braless.

While Jen says she likes to do without the bra at home, she’s also pretty well known for going without the added support while out in public, too, at both red carpet events and when she’s busy running errands.

As the darling of Dior, some of her bralessness is for fashion’s sake, because those bra straps just don’t look good with couture, but other times it’s out of comfort. Jen, as if we didn’t have enough reasons to love you already!

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian has made her business empire off of her body, but even when she steps out braless, it still manages to make the news. In sheer bodysuits and tops, shirts and dresses cut down to there, and blazers with no bra, Kim kept tongues wagging at New York Fashion Week this past September, when her nips were her plus-one to almost all the shows!

Look, if Kim wants to free the nipple, we say go, girl! As a mom and an independent woman, if Kim feels sexy showing it off, who cares? It seems like going bra-free is a popular trend in the Kardashian-Jenner family!

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifter Aniston’s nipples were the next member of the group. Especially in early episodes, when going bra free was the ‘90s trend du jour, Jen’s girls showed up to the set more than a few times! They were so visible that fans began wondering if Jen had a clause in her contract that stated her nips had to be on show, or if she even had a bra with a pair built in!

It seems that the Free the Nipple trend has caught Jen’s interest now, too, as she’s regularly photographed sans brassiere, especially when she’s not working. She rocks her California cool-girl vibe by letting the ladies roam free in strappy tops, tanks, and T-shirts, and is totally unapologetic when they get a little more pronounced than usual.

Jen’s in her 40s and totally nails the no-bra trend, so we won’t see her starting to don the over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder any time soon, at least if she can help it!

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner is famous for flaunting their assets on social media, magazine spreads, TV shows, fashion runways – you name it. The second youngest of the brood, Kendall Jenner actually caused a stir of controversy when she freed the nipple during a Marc Jacobs runway walk, where she wore a sheer, long-sleeved top. But the bralessness for this model doesn’t end there!

With more than a few (pierced) nip-slips to her name, Kendall is typically model-cool about the whole thing, saying she doesn’t get what the big deal is with going braless. When asked, Kendall said,

“I think it’s cool and I really just don’t care! It’s sexy, it’s comfortable, and I’m cool with my breasts.”

She’s totally right! After a few times of going bra-free (especially when you’re in the shape that Kendall is), it becomes easier and easier to go without the added support. It’s that casual, effortless appeal that makes her such a star on the fashion circuit.

Rihanna

Rihanna is as famous for her daring fashion choices. Her casual approach to the whole no-bra thing is so chill that it makes perfect sense that Rihanna would hate wearing them.

In an interview with Vogue, where she graced the cover sans bra again, Rihanna declared that yep, she still hates bras! But it turns out her penchant for going braless is not from laziness or forgetfulness.

Instead, Rihanna said that if she’s wearing a top, she doesn’t wear a bra, and if she’s wearing a bra, she’ll just wear the bra. So, instead of her bralessness as some sort of attention-grabbing antic, Rihanna’s choice to free the nipple is actually a calculated style decision!

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus would rather wear ice cream cone-shaped pasties or leather straps to cover her nips than subject herself to a full boob prison. Even when she’s not working the crowd, Miley would rather just throw on a T-shirt or tank top and let her girls hang free.

Unfortunately, instead of doing without support for the twins for shock value or plain old comfort, Miley subscribes to the Gwyneth Paltrow School of Nonsense, and explained her braless ways by tweeting out a French study that described the (debunked) idea that wearing a bra can lead to breast cancer.

While Miley definitely went without a bra for ages before this tweet, it didn’t help that she continued to be a celebrity to spread the disproved and untrue “facts” it discussed.

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan going braless is something she’s been doing for over a decade, and not always to a flattering effect. Poor Lindsay has had major weight fluctuations in the past, including a very scary-skinny stint in the mid-2000s. Drastic weight losses and gains like that can cause a reduction in the elasticity of the breast tissue, which leads to premature sagging – something Lindsay is definitely dealing with.

Her penchant for doffing the bra led to an interview question posed by Andy Cohen, where he asked what we were all thinking: Why? Lindsay’s answer was simple, and one pretty much every girl can relate to: She just doesn’t like them.

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum may have wanted to let the clothes speak for themselves and so what if those those pesky boobs have to suffer for it! We’ve got to admit though, the no-bra style works for her, because she still manages to look amazing! Former Victoria’s Secret model and woman with her own line of lingerie actually really hates wearing bras!

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey doesn’t hate all bras. In fact, sometimes she loves them so much, she’ll avoid wearing a shirt so she can show them off more! However, Mariah is also pretty well known for trying out the braless look – something she’s been doing since the 1990s!

While her breasts definitely aren’t 100% natural, Mariah’s still a pretty bodacious lady, and one of the few large-chested women on this list who’s cool with letting it all hang out. You might think it would make her feel a tad uncomfortable, but Mariah has always been Mariah, and you know what they say: if you’ve got it, flaunt it!

Scout Willis

Scout Willis has been a longtime advocate of the Free the Nipple campaign, and in 2014 protested Instagram’s nudity policy by walking around New York City topless. (Where it’s totally legal.)

She’s been photographed multiples times at parties, on coffee runs, at events, and out shopping without the bra and she seems totally unfazed by the attention she might be getting from it because, hello, there are bigger issues here.

She’s a firm believer in the #FreeTheNipple movement and has been outspoken about her decision to go bra-free for the sake of desexualizing breasts and destigmatizing the female body. For a more in-depth look at her reasoning.

What is Free The Nipple?

Free The Nipple is a global campaign group that hopes to encourage equality, empowerment and freedom of all human beings.

The organisation also works to raise awareness and spark change on a number of social issues and injustices.

The Free The Nipple movement was inspired by a 2012 film of the same name, which followed Lina Esco and a group of women attempting to shed light on the issue.

Campaigners’ mission is for all human beings to be treated as equals.

In December 2014, Netflix released a drama documentary titled Free the Nipple that follows a group of young women in New York City who begin a campaign to protest criminalization and censorship of female breasts.

This led to the “Free the Nipple” campaign becoming a global phenomenon. The Free the Nipple campaign is part of a larger mission to reclaim women’s bodies, sexuality and safety. The campaigns main focus is on equality and empowerment of all human beings.

The movement argues that both men and women have breasts, whether big or small. They share the same characteristics such as breast tissue, areolas and nipples.

The major difference between men and women’s breasts is that the ability to produce milk for offspring. The Netflix documentary argues that the media glorifies violence but censors women’s breasts which creates mystery and the fetishization of women’s breasts.

This then defines our chests as being inherently sexual rather than a feature of biological functions.

Many also criticize the movement for using female breasts to grab attention to fight for the equality of women in a male-dominated world because men have consumed women’s bodies for their own pleasure for years. Others believe it’s putting power back into the hands of women.

Who Started the Free the Nipple Movement?

It’s unclear exactly how this movement began, but much of the movement’s public presence today is due in part to the work of filmmaker Lina Esco, who created a film titled, of course, Free the Nipple.

The general plot of the film, as according to the director herself, is about a revolutionary girl and the journalist who follows her during her topless protests.

After watching her subject get arrested during one of her protests, the journalist (played by Esco) educates herself on the laws of NYC, and decides to figure out why we allow things like violence and swearing in the media—but not the female anatomy.

The film culminates in a scene whereby several women run around in one of the most populated areas in the world, Times Square.

Considering Esco started writing the film in 2012, it’s been a major talking point in the movement, even before the film actually debuted in 2014.

If you want to go back much further, In Rochester, NY in 1986, seven women tried to do what guys had been doing legally for years—walk around topless.

They were arrested in violation of New York state law. They were inevitably acquitted in 1992 by the state’s supreme court, making N.Y. a legally topfree state for men and women.

The case in Rochester was the legal starting ground for topless equality between men and women.

Free the Nipple History

In 2012, filmmaker Lina Esco started this campaign in New York City. She created a documentary of herself running through the streets of New York topless. As the documentary was being made, she posted teaser clips with the hashtag #FreeTheNipple. In 2013,

Facebook removed these clips from its website for violating its guidelines. In 2014, several celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Lena Dunham, Chelsea Handler, Rihanna, and Chrissy Teigen posted photos on social media to show their support of Esco’s initiative.

Two protesters, Tiernan Hebron and UCSD graduate student Anni Ma were arrested for indecent exposure outside of a campaign appearance for Senator Bernie Sanders on March 23, 2016.

They appeared topless except for pieces of tape over their nipples, and had the words “Free the Nipple”, “Equality”, and “Feel the Bern” written on their chests.

Los Angeles Police officers asked them to cover their breasts, and the two women refused and were arrested. They were held for 25 hours in jail but were not charged with any crime.

After being released, Ma filed a federal lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department. Ma said that her action was not lewd because mammary glands are not sexual organs, but rather have the purpose of breastfeeding children, and said she believed she did not at any point show her “genitals” or “private parts”.

Her attorney claims she was never “nude” and that California’s indecent exposure law applies only to genitals, not breasts.

Her lawsuit also alleged that her constitutional rights had been violated, that she had been subject to unlawful gender discrimination, and that federal civil rights laws had been violated.

She was topless at a Bernie Sanders campaign rally, March 19, 2016, in Phoenix, Arizona, and she was led to the back of the venue without incident.

On 23 January 2016, Anni Ma, as a FEMEN activist, Carly Mitchell, Chelsea Ducote and Marston protested at a “Walk For Life” event at the San Francisco City Hall and the Civic Center.

Historically, women have sometimes been arrested or charged with public indecency, disturbing the peace, or lewd behavior for baring their breasts in public, even in jurisdictions where there was no law explicitly prohibiting doing so.

In New York state, female toplessness was made legal around 1990, and when a woman was arrested there in 2005 for appearing topless in public, a court ruled in her favor and she later received US$29,000 in damages.

In 2015, the campaign received attention in Iceland after a teenage student activist posted a photo of herself topless and was harassed for doing so.

In support of the student and the initiative, Björt Ólafsdóttir, a Member of Parliament, posted a topless photo of herself in solidarity.

Free the Nipple events were held in Brighton, England, in 2016 and 2018. The Free the Nipple Brighton group is headed up by Bee Nicholls and Mickey F, both of Brighton.

In 2017, a Free The Nipple event was held in Hull, England, on the day also celebrated as Women’s Equality Day and Go Topless Day, on the anniversary of when women gained the right to vote in the United States in 1920.
