Louis Lumière: The Revolutionary Creator of the First Motion Picture
Louis Lumière is an indispensable name in the history of cinema. By creating the first-ever motion picture, he captivated audiences worldwide. Even after his passing on June 6, 1948, his legacy continues to be felt. Born on October 5, 1864, in France, Louis, alongside his brother Auguste, crafted the first motion picture in 1895.
This pioneering film left viewers utterly amazed as they witnessed moving images on a screen for the first time, a stark departure from static pictures. Bringing the film to a public platform took some time, but Louis Lumière held its first public screening at the Salon Indien du Grand Café in Paris on December 26, 1895. The film made its way to India in 1896-97.
From a young age, Louis had a passion for photography, beginning his journey in a photographic studio. His father had started a small factory producing photographic plates. Louis worked there tirelessly from early morning until late at night. By 1882, however, the factory was struggling, which led his brother Auguste to help expand the business.
In the factory, Louis and Auguste began producing a new type of photo plate called “etiquettes bleue” in 1884, which also provided employment to dozens of people. Louis initiated a motion picture project in 1892, holding its first private screening on March 22, 1895, in Paris, attended by about 200 people.
